3 Quick Ways to get Calm Fast

3 Quick Ways to get Calm Fast

Being human is tough. Even with the most positive attitude, stress and anxiety have a way of pushing into our minds and thoughts. Sometimes stress comes in waves so big even the best swimmer can't make it to shore.

In my experience, I've learned that it's not about ridding yourself of these feelings but rather acknowledging them, accepting your human and finding your zen. Below are three ways that not only work for me but are also scientifically proven to reduce stress:

Close your eyes and breathe - Breathing is a key element in everything meditational. Closing your eyes blackens the images around you and forces you to focus on taking long and deep breaths. NPR wrote that deep breathing is a, "built-in stress reliever." Do this for about two minutes.

Play your favorite, relaxing music - Music is medicinal. We've all experienced this in some way or another when listening to relaxing music. It not only distracts but delivers new feelings. According to an article by the American Psychological Association, music, "...reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol." The article also points out that music creates vibrations which may also lead to the ease of stress.

Light candles or incense - Inhaling aromas can stimulate our brains in various ways. Hence the term, Aromatherapy. Smelling mint for example can help a headache, lavender can calm. These don't need to be natural either. A cinnamon cookie candle might remind someone of home.
